Housing

How We are Lensing A Hand to society

Housing

In the year 2014 Vijayapuram Social Service Society conducted a Socio-Economic survey of the diocesan people. The consolidation and analysis of the data brought out a major issue of housing. 766 families dwell in huts and shanties, in rented houses and in joint families and 347 families in damaged houses. 52 families do have neither land nor house. This had been a pointer why our people still have a sense of low dignity and lack of high aspirations.

Housing is an important fundamental right of the citizen of India. It has to be protected since this is part and parcel of human dignity. Housing forms an indispensable part of ensuring human dignity. “Adequate housing” encompasses more than just the four walls of a room and a roof over one’s head. Housing is essential for normal healthy living. It fulfills deep-seated psychological needs for privacy and personal space; physical needs for security and protection from inclement weather; and social needs for basic gathering points where important relationships are forged and nurtured. In many societies, a house also serves an important function as an economic center where essential commercial activities are performed. A decent house determines social, economic, cultural, climatic, ecological and other factors of development and dignity of a person and for that matter of a family. The vulnerable families include Women headed families, families with older persons, and families with persons with chronic sickness and disability.

Vijayapuram Social Service Society has never taken housing program as mere housing only, and as a supportive service, The focus is providing permanent housing to people experiencing chronic homelessness, on building and strengthening the human personality and self esteem that would enhance the social and community integration, improvements to health and improve their quality of life. Thus housing programme is a package of programme leading to sustainable growth and development.

Kudil Rehitha Roopatha Housing programme is the programme implemented with great ambition to have safe and secured houses to all who are poor, destitute and marginalised.

The Vijayapuram Social Service Society has been empowered to build around 600 houses through this project with the immense cooperation of many well-wishers, both local and foreign. The Kerala Housing Board, the Italian Bishops’ Conference and We-Share are the main agencies who were put hands together to achieve this goal.
